EWC Saddened by Passing of Former Board Member and South Korean PM Nam Duck-woo

1956 The East-West Center community was saddened to learn of the passing on May 18 of former Board of Governors member Nam Duck-woo, who served as South Korea’s Prime Minister in the early 1980s. Nam, a former finance minister who had helped oversee Korea’s rapid economic expansion, was on a visiting fellowship at EWC when he received the prime minister appointment in 1980, and he later served a total of nine years on the Center’s board. In recent years, he served as a senior economic adviser to recently elected President Park Gyeun-hye. A dedicated EWC supporter, he visited the Center almost every year since he left the board.
