Susan Kreifels manages Center’s journalism fellowships and exchanges. A former journalist, she covered Asia and the Pacific Islands while based in Manila, Tokyo, Washington, D.C., Honolulu and Guam. Kreifels reported for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, USA TODAY, Dallas Morning News, and Pacific Stars and Stripes and co-hosted a radio talk show on U.S. media for Japan’s NHK public radio. She has received a number of journalism awards and fellowships. Kreifels teaches Global Communication at the University of Hawai`i and speaks on international journalism issues, including lecturer at the China School of Journalism, Beijing, and Copple-Hearst Lecturer at the University of Nebraska School of Journalism. She founded International Women in Communications, Tokyo, and is a founding member of the Asian Journalists Association. She earned an M.A. in education from the University of Nebraska and completed a year of graduate work in Japan Studies at The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
