SUMMER 2007

May 28 - June 17, 2007. Institute on Korean Culture and Society. The program includes one week of lectures at the East-West Center in Honolulu on Korean history, literature, religion, politics and film, and two weeks of field study in Seoul and other cultural sites throughout South Korea. This is the fifth iteration of this popular institute since 1997; this year it is jointly funded by the Korea Foundation and the Freeman Foundation.

June 18-July 20. NEH Institute on The Ideal and the Real: Arcs of Change in Chinese Culture (5 weeks). The institute examines the historical interplay among religious, philosophical, social, political and artistic ideals and realities as a means of understanding the historical dynamics of cultural change in China and continuing through the country's stunning re-emergence as a global leader. Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Director: Roger Ames, Department of Philosophy (University of Hawai`i).

July 2-July 22. U.S.-China Faculty Exchange (program for Chinese faculty in the U.S.)  [Note: as part of a 2-year project, the Summer 2007 program is limited to faculty from Mainland China.]

July 24 - August 10, 2007. Institute on Infusing East Asia into the Undergraduate Curriculum (3 weeks). This annual three-week Institute, funded by the Freeman Foundation, focuses on faculty and institutional development related to the undergraduate teaching of Asia at two-year and four-year colleges and universities. The focus of the 2007 program is East Asia (primarily China and Japan). The interdisciplinary Institute program features lectures and discussions on the culture, history, and contemporary complexion of the region, and works with participants in developing Asian studies on their home campuses.

ASDP sponsored a series of thematically-linked, Asia-focused, faculty development seminars aimed at those faculty teaching the undergraduate humanities curriculum. On-line conference was September 2-6, 2003. Conference papers are posted at the website.
