Ms. Zainah Anwar will share the Sisters in Islam experience in claiming a public space and creating a public voice for Muslim women demanding an understanding of Islam that recognizes equality and justice, and challenging the use of Islam in laws and policies that can discriminate against women. She believes in the possibilities within Islam for reform to take place.

A scholar, activist, and journalist, Ms. Anwar has written and spoken extensively on politics and civil liberties in Malaysia. She is the co-founder of Sisters in Islam, and currently serves on the organization's Board of Directors. She is also the Project Director of Musawah, a Global Movement for Equality and Justice in the Muslim Family. In addition, she works directly with lawyers on the conflict of jurisdiction between the sharia and civil courts in Malaysia.

Ms. Anwar was formerly a member of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia; Chief Programme Officer with the Political Affairs Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London; Senior Analyst at the Institute of Strategic and International Studies in Kuala Lumpur; and Political and Diplomatic Writer for New Straits Time.

She was educated at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and the MARA Institute of Technology, Malaysia, in the fields of international relations and journalism.
