The 2017 Asian Regional Conference on Peri-Urbanization: Emerging Issues and Practices at Tongji University, Shanghai, China co-sponsored by the East-West Center and Tongji University will explore how urban and regional planning can contribute to a better quality of life in Asian peri-urban areas.
The Asian Regional Conference on Peri-Urbanization: Emerging Issues and Practices will bring together 150 scholars from China, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, The Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Korea and other countries to share their experience on emerging trends in peri-urbanization in Asia. Keynote speeches, panel presentations, and discussions will explore what peri-urbanization is, governance, management and administration in peri-urban areas, peri-urban government policies, and the consequences of peri-urban programs.
The conference will examine how to define and map peri-urban areas using remote sensing, big data and other new technologies, land use, density and sprawl, environmental impacts of peri-urbanization on air, water, and land pollution, health impacts of migration and mobility to and from peri-urban areas, metropolitan government fragmentation and jurisdictional issues, provision of transportation, electricity, water, waste disposal, and other infrastructure, and formal and informal mechanisms to coordinate peri-urbanization.
