The college serves approximately 16,000 credit students and an equal number of students in non-credit programs. The college has 870 full time faculty and staff and has more than 100 transfer agreements with regional colleges and universities.
Asian/International Stage of Development: JCCC has a well-developed international program that works to infuse Asian content into many parts of the college. The curriculum includes four semesters of both Chinese and Japanese languages, Eastern Civilization, Introduction to Asian Art, Asian Furniture and Ornamentation, The Sociology of Chinese Society, and other courses with significant Asian content, such as world Religions and World Cultures. Recent/Planned Activities: Last year, the college sponsored a three-day conference entitled Translating China: Perceptions and Misperceptions which featured H. Lyman Miller as the keynote speaker and included performances by the group Music from China. In the spring of 2002, we hope to host Qiu Xiaolong, author of Death of a Red Heroine, for readings and presentations on his writing. In 2003, JCCC will host an ASDP conference entitled Traditions of Dissent: Negotiating Authoritative Change in East and Southeast Asian Societies. The college has a close association with the East Asian Studies Department at the University of Kansas and co-sponsors programs whenever possible. Study Abroad and Faculty Exchange Programs:
International partners include Northwest Polytechincial University in Xi'an, China and Zhejiang Wanli University in Ningbo, China. Faculty exchanges with these institutions occur each year. As a member of the Global Network, JCCC has frequent interactions with other colleges in Asia.
JCCC is a member of the College Consortium for International Studies, and through this consortium offers students have the opportunity to study in China and Korea for semester or summer programs.Grants: JCCC has received a grant from the Office of Education for international curriculum development and one from NAFSA for the development of the Intercultural Semester Program.
