781.280.3534; falcettaf@middlesex.cc.ma.usBrief Institutional Description: Middlesex is a comprehensive, state financed, community college with a head count of 7451 and an FTE of 4161. We have two campuses, one in Lowell, Massachusetts with a racially, ethnically mixed student population, and one in Bedford, Massachusetts with a primarily white, middle-class and upper middle class population.
Stage of Development (International & Asia): We have been working on internationalizing our curriculum since the late 1980's when we made "internationalizing" part of our mission statement. We have a large number of courses with infused Asian content, but few courses specifically dedicated to Asian studies.
Recent & Planned Activities: We regularly send one person to the three week ASDP Summer Institute. We have also sent faculty to other ASDP institutes. Since 1992, Middlesex has regularly sponsored workshops and institutes for teachers in the six New England states. We recently held a one-day workshop on Indian culture. This academic year we are planning to sponsor a major workshop on Taiwan--China-US relations.
Primary Faculty Resources: Julien Farland (Philosophy), Orian Greene (English), Elizabeth Hastings (Business), Sue Hunt (Allied Health), Gail Mooney (English), Peyton Paxson (Criminal Justice), Michael Rodman (Psychology).
Study Abroad Programs: Our college regularly sends groups of students to China, the Netherlands, Costa Rica, Ireland, and Spain. The "study" part of these programs is somewhat limited.
Grants: From 1991 until 1996, we received two NEH giants for faculty development (Mainland Southeast Asia and Spanish South America), a Title VI grant for faculty development (East Asia), a Fulbright Scholar in Residence grant (Japanese Philosophy), and a Japan Foundation Library Support grant. More recently, we have received a Title VI grant for faculty development (Cambodian and Vietnamese Culture), an NEH grant for faculty development (African and African-American Culture), and we are about to submit a Fulbright Group Projects grant for study and travel in Cambodia (October, 2001).
