KIEP/NEAEF Meeting on Northeast Asian Economic Integration:  Prospects for a Northeast Asian Free Trade Agreement
August 6-7

Although most of the world’s countries are members of regional trade agreements, none of the Northeast Asian countries were until 2002, when the Japan-Singapore and Korea-Chile agreements were concluded. In cooperation with the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), the Northeast Asia Economic Forum (NEAEF) is holding a meeting on the effects of a possible free trade agreement between China, Japan, and Korea.  The meeting will be held off-campus and is by invitation only because of limited facilities.

August 11 -- Approximately 100 new East-West Center students arrive and begin orientation at the Center before University of Hawaii classes begin on August 25.

2nd Changing Faces Women's Leadership Program

August 11-24 (EWC 8/11-16, 8/22-24; Sydney, Australia 8/17-21)

Changing Faces is a program designed to bring together women from the United States and the Asia Pacific region to participate in dialogue on leadership and issues specific to women in leadership around the region. The program seeks professional women at lower and middle level positions of leadership who have the potential to move into positions of greater responsibility and influence. The theme for the 2003 program is "Women's Economic Empowerment in Asia, the Pacific, and the United States." More information>>>

2003 EWC/KOTI Conference on Building an Integrated Transport Market for China, Japan, and Korea: Building a Regional Coordinating Institution

August 11-12 at  EWC

This final phase of a three-year study will bring together a task force of transportation experts from the government and private sectors from China, Japan and Korea, and a group of world-distinguished scholars to design the implementation strategies, processes, and institutional arrangements for achieving free, efficient and harmonized air, maritime and inter-modal transport systems among China, Japan, and Korea.

Senior Policy Seminar

The Senior Policy Seminar brings together senior and influential policy makers, government officials, and academic experts from the United States and the Asia Pacific region for discussions on the economic, social and strategic dynamics and the future of U.S. policy in the region. Participation in the Senior Policy Seminar is by invitation only. Grant Aldonas is the Under Secretary for International Trade, heading the International Trade Administration at the U.S. Department for Commerce. He is the Senior Trade Negotiator for the U.S. Government.  Under Secretary Aldonas is returning to Washington via Honolulu following

the latest trade negotiations with New Zealand and Australia. His priorities include:

  • Expanding export opportunities for American business, particularly small and medium-sized and minority-owned enterprises;
  • Enforcing trade agreements to ensure that American exporters obtain the benefits of the bargain the United States reached in previous negotiations;
  • Enforcing U.S. trade law to deter unfair trade practices that deny U.S. firms the opportunity to compete on an equal basis with their foreign competition.

Internal Conflicts in Asia: II (Xinjiang and Tibet Study Internal Groups)

August 20-21 at EWC

To develop an in-depth understanding of the key issues of contention in specific conflicts in the context of ongoing nation and state building projects of the national elite; generate ideas to ameliorate tension; and facilitate eventual conflict settlement.

The 2nd Study Group Meeting on Xinjiang and Tibet will discuss and review each of the draft policy papers. Based on the discussion of the study group and an external review, authors will produce a final version of their papers, which will be subsequently published by the East-West Center Washington in the policy paper series.

Asian Global Energy Markets Conference

August 27-29 at EWC

This special conference will discuss and analyze the latest developments in the Asian energy markets and how they impact global energy markets. International speakers will include former staff, students and trainees of the EWC's Energy Program over the past 20 years. Twenty-five participants trained at the Center, and now holding important positions in the public and private sectors around the region and the United States, will discuss key energy issues relevant to their own responsibilities and countries of expertise.

Indonesian Judges Seminar on International Humanitarian Law.

August 30–September 13 (EWC 8/30-9/6; The Hague 9/7-12)

Over a two-week period at the East-West Center and The Hague, eight faculty with experience in international criminal tribunals and ten judges of the Indonesian Ad Hoc Human Rights Tribunal will discuss a wide range of legal, procedural, and investigative issues pertinent to trials of suspected human rights offenders in Indonesia.

In the Arts . . .

Exhibition: "Arts from the Rainforest:  Sarawak, East Malaysia"

June 13 – August 31, EWC Gallery, John A. Burns Hall.

This exhibition will feature the extraordinary cultures of Sarawak, on the northern coast of Borneo, including the Orang Ulu and Iban peoples.  The gallery will have examples of textiles, carvings, bark paintings, beadwork, rattan basketry and mats, as well as contemporary batik paintings.

This exhibition was organized by the Society Atelier Sarawak; guest curator is Edric Ong. Major support was provided by the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak Ministry of Touism, Sarawak Ministry of Social Development, Sarawak Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia, the Sarawak Museum, Malaysian Airlines, Sarawak Cultural Village, and the North American ASEAN Consultants, Inc.

EWC Arts Programs are supported by the Hawai'i Pacific Rim Society, the Jackie Chan Foundation, the Arthur Goodfriend Fund, and generous contributions to the EWC Foundation.

Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday Noon-4 p.m. Closed Saturdays and holidays. Admission is free. Visitor parking on the adjacent UH campus is $3 and is usually easily available after 4 p.m. weekdays; Sunday parking is normally free and ample.
