Tourism In A Borderless World: The Singapore Experience
by T. C. Chang
Asia Pacific Issues No. 73 May 2004

The phenomenon of “regional tourism” emerged in the 1990s. Countries and cities are increasingly looking across political borders to collaborate with one another in policy planning, project development, and tourism marketing. Shared natural and cultural resources can be jointly developed and promoted, and infrastructural duplication and harmful competition between countries minimized. The approach may be especially of interest to small countries, for which the experience of Singapore provides useful insights.

T.C. Chang was a visiting fellow at the East-West Center in Fall 2003. He is an associate professor in the Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore.

Exhibition: "Remains of a Rainbow"

A traveling photo exhibit of Hawaii's rare and endangered plants and animals

May 11 - June 18, 2004
EWC Gallery, John A. Burns Hall, corner East-West Road and Dole Street

[related events will be announced soon; see www.EastWestCenter.org/arts

This stunning collection of portraits from acclaimed wildlife photographers David Liittschwager and Susan Middleton documents the rich but imperiled tapestry of life that is native to the Hawaiian Islands. In 2001, Liittschwager and Middleton released their long-awaited third book, Remains of a Rainbow: Rare Plants and Animals of Hawai`i, published by National Geographic in association with Environmental Defense. More than 40 of the portraits from this book have been reproduced as part of the exhibit.

Photographing rare and endangered plants and animals can require a dedication that borders upon obsession. While most wildlife photographers shoot their subjects in their natural settings, Liittschwager and Middleton create compelling portraits by isolating individual species on a black or white backdrop, illuminating their beauty, complexity and marvelous intelligence of design. Flowers burst with color; insects glow luminously; birds and fish stare back at the viewer, revealing distinct personalities.
