Seminar on Securitizing the \'Population Bomb\': Does Demographic Change Lead to Civil War?
November 16, 2005
John A. Burns Hall, EWC
Noon - 1:00 p.m.

Presentation by Henrik Urdal, EWC visiting scholar.

After the end of the Cold War, there has been an increasing interest in demographic factors as potential causes of political instability and armed conflict. More recently, a much broader debate on security implications of demography has emerged. Demographic change is seen as a process that fundamentally and continuously influence and change society, asserting that such change may stimulate political instability and violent conflict under certain political and economic conditions.

Seminar: Avian Flu — Biosecurity, Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development: the Role of ASEAN and other Organizations Seminar in Environmental Change Vulnerability and Governance
November 18, 2005
Noon — 1:00 p.m.
Burns 3015/19

Presentation by Koh Kheng Lian, professor of Law, National University of Singapore.

Avian flu has now taken flight from Asia to Europe, and threatens to spread to other parts of the world. It has raised biosecurity, biodiversity conservation issues regarding the interface between animal and human health, and the ‘sustainable development’ of the poultry industry. The lack of good animal husbandry in farming and management methods has contributed to the genesis and spread of the disease.

Central Asian Embroidered Textiles
Curated by Sharon Littlefield and Michael Schuster
Photographs by Hermine Dreyfuss
Designed by Michael Schuster and Lynne Najita

November 3, 2005- January 19, 2006

East-West Center Gallery
Honolulu, Hawai‘i

John A. Burns Hall, 1601 East-West Road
(corner Dole St. & East-West Rd.)

A bold and colorful collection of suzani textiles collected by the late heiress Doris Duke (1912-1993) for her Honolulu home, Shangri La, will be shown publicly for the first time at the East-West Center Gallery beginning Sunday, Nov. 6, in conjunction with The Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.

Suzani is the Persian word for needle and it is aptly applied to this textile tradition, one that remains strong today in the Uzbekistan city of Bukhara, an important stop along the legendary Silk Road. Historically made by women for their daughters\' dowries, the bright and bold suzanis serve such decorative purposes as wall hangings, bedding, table covers, and curtains.

In residence November 1-9:

Dilbar Khalimova of Bukhara is a prominent Uzbek dye master and embroiderer with her own studio in the heart of the Old City of Bukhara. Dilbar learned the art of embroidery from her mother in Uzbekistan. She has organized and developed UNESCO-funded programs to teach traditional skills to the younger generation.

Hermine Dreyfuss is a Washington-based photographer/visual ethnographer specializing in textile traditions around the world. She has photographed the work of Javanese batik artists, Sumbanese and Guatemalan ikat weavers, Kyrgyz felt-makers, Indian block printers, and Uzbek suzani embroiderers.
