Lessons Learned from the UN Serious Crimes Trials in East Timor
A conference to promote regional discussion on international justice issues
Bangkok, Thailand
May 26 - 29, 2006
The goal of the conference is to reflect upon the experience of the five years of the Serious Crimes Process so that other tribunals and individuals interested in international justice may learn from the challenges and successes of the trials in Dili, East Timor. This is particularly important for the Khmer Rouge Tribunal in Phnom Penh, which is now in the process of being established.
The conference will bring together key participants and observers of the East Timor trials including individuals who represent all parts of the process (investigation, prosecution, defense, judges, appeals, human rights oversight, and administration and senior management) as it developed over time, and who have reflected on the process and what there is to learn from it. Some of the most astute observers of the trials, both international and Timorese, will also attend.
In addition to the participants whose expertise is specifically on East Timor, participants from the ASEAN international law/human rights community and from the new Khmer Rouge Tribunal in Phnom Penh are invited. Papers from the conference will be published in book form by the Center.
David Cohen and Philip Estermann are co-coordinators of this conference.
