First ‘Cross Strait’ Energy Book Released
HONOLULU (June 5) –Energy Economics and Policy in Mainland China and Taiwan, the first book dealing with cross-strait energy issues, was recently published by the Beijing-based China Environmental Science Press.
Co-edited by East-West Center Senior Fellow ZhongXiang Zhang and Yunchang Jeffrey Bor of the Taipei-based Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, the over 300-page book comprises 20 chapters, including 13 from Mainland China, written by senior officials, leading experts and chief executives from 21 institutes in the Mainland and Taiwan. It offers in-depth analysis of issues related to coal and clean coal technologies, oil, natural gas, power generation, nuclear energy, energy conservation, renewable energy, energy security, environmental issues, and energy cooperation across the Taiwan Strait.
Former Taiwan Prime Minister and current Chung-Hua Chairman Vincent C. Siew writes in the book’s preface, “This is the first book of this kind that comprehensively addresses the challenging energy issues facing Mainland China and Taiwan.” Siew goes on to write, “this book is of significant value to the formulation of sound energy policy across the Strait.”
Zhang, the lead editor who took overall responsibility for the structure, contents, and quality of the book, says “it is unique in that it covers areas so important to sharing the ‘cross-Strait’ experiences and lessons learned and to the development of mutual benefits to both Mainland China and Taiwan.” He notes that “it is the first time leading experts in the energy field have joined not only senior officials responsible for policy but also chief executives to seek out cross-strait win-win cooperation.”
The edited volume is based on a collection of selected presentations made at the Cross-Strait Conference on Energy Economics and Markets held in Taipei in June 2005 and other solicited contributions. The ’05 event itself has been cast as historic. It was co-organized by Bor and Zhang, and, according to the former, the conference was “the largest in number of participants, the most comprehensive in terms of topics covered, and the highest-ranking (conference) to have taken place in Taiwan since 1949.”
