Brimming with articles and interviews ranging from the EWC’s Pakistan visit to explore ways to assist civil society, to analysis of Japan’s post-crisis energy policies, the Winter/Spring 2011 combined issue of the Observer and EWC Associates Update is now available online to download. In support of the Center-wide sustainability initiative to lighten our environmental impact, the EWC will reduce the amount of printed hard copies produced and in turn subsequent issues of these publications will take on a more environmentally-friendly e-newsletter format. Initial steps taken by EWC students to reduce our energy and water consumption and implement recycling programs have already brought state-wide recognition with the EWC being the first educational institution to receive a Hawai‘i Green Business and Green Government Award . “We want to move further in this direction,” noted Karen Knudsen, EWC Director of External Affairs, “as a result we’ve decided to increase our use of online forms of communication.” The Center has already made great strides toward this online emphasis with a variety of e-newsletters that are geared for specific target audiences and areas of interest. The EWCA Alumni e-news will continue to provide monthly updates on the activities of the Center’s alumni chapters and members. The EWCA blog and the East-West Center Alumni and Community Facebook Page also provide another avenue for our alumni and extended community to interact with the Center online. The main East-West Center Facebook Page and Twitter account provide frequent event updates and analysis on issues affecting the region and are intended for the general public. Another new addition to the Center’s online publications is the Washington Update , an e-newsletter featuring programs and publications from the East-West Center in Washington. Additional ongoing online projects from the Washington Office with regular updates and resources focus on Asia Matters for America , ASEAN Matters for America , and Japan Matters for America . The Center also produces a variety of other e-newsletters and updates ranging from the MediaLine , designed for media professionals, the Pacific Islands Report , a daily roundup of key news articles from the Pacific, and the EWC Arts Program Updates , among others.
