Featured East-West Center Series
Studies in Asian Security
INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES FOR PROSPECTIVE AUTHORS
A PDF version of the guidelines for prospective authors is available.
Highlights of Publishing in the Series:
- Publication in a highly reputed university press in the first theoretically oriented series focused on Asian security.
- Input from a strong Series editorial committee comprising members with expertise both in theory and Asian security.
- Simultaneous publication in cloth and paperback.
- Publication of an Asian edition for most books in the Series. The National University of Singapore Press will publish Asian editions of selected books in the Series on Northeast and Southeast Asia. In addition, SUP will always attempt to sell South Asian reprint rights, for books focused specifically on that region, to established publishers in that territory.
- A subsidy for each book to cover the cost of index preparation up to a maximum of US$1,000.
- Promotion of books in the Series by Stanford University Press and the East-West Center.
Submissions:
Initial submissions may take the form of a complete manuscript plus a descriptive proposal or a proposal only. Proposals should run 10 to 20 pages and set out the issue, problem, or puzzle investigated, the scholarly and policy significance of the study, methodology employed, and the findings of the study. Where a proposal is submitted for a manuscript still being written, it should include the time frame for completion of the proposed manuscript. A CV listing relevant qualifications and publications should accompany all submissions. Submissions must be original and not published elsewhere, and the Series does not accept simultaneous submission to more than one press.
Completed manuscripts should have a full table of contents, be double spaced with 1-inch margins with endnotes at the end of the manuscript, have clearly denoted chapter heads and subheads, include camera ready artwork, and be forwarded in individual chapters in Microsoft Word format. Authors should refrain from identifying themselves in their proposals and manuscripts. Only electronic submissions are accepted. A full list of guidelines for authors is available from the SUP website.
Screening and Review Process:
Screening by the Series Editorial Committee
Complete manuscripts undergo a two-stage screening and review process. In the first stage, the Series committee screens the manuscript for its suitability for the Series both in terms of subject and the high standards expected of publications in the Series. If considered suitable, it will be forwarded to Stanford University Press (SUP) for peer review. Alternatively the Series committee may recommend revision and resubmission, or it may reject the manuscript. The Series committee will endeavor to complete the screening process within 30 days of receipt of manuscript.
Proposals undergo a three-stage screening and review process. In the first stage, the Series committee screens the proposal for suitability of the project for the Series. If considered potentially suitable, the Series committee will ask for submission of a complete manuscript when written. On receipt, the Series committee will screen the manuscript and, if considered suitable, it will be forwarded to SUP for peer review. Again, the Series committee may recommend revision and resubmission, or it may reject the manuscript. The Series committee will endeavor to complete the screening process within 30 days of receipt of manuscript.
Peer Review and Decision to Publish
Complete manuscripts received by SUP from the Series committee are sent out for blind peer review to reviewers agreed on by SUP and the Series committee. Assuming the reviews are generally positive, authors are asked to respond in writing outlining which of any suggested revisions they will make. If the reviews are not positive, the author may be asked to rewrite and resubmit for a second round of reviews. At this stage, SUP will run a financial feasibility study on the project to ensure that it can be published cost-effectively.
The reviews, the author response, a supportive statement from the Series committee, and a proposal by the SUP editor responsible for Series are submitted to the SUP editorial board, which makes the final determination on acceptance of a manuscript for publication. This entire process, from receipt of complete manuscript to decision to publish usually takes three or four months.
Contract and Publication:
Contract
Upon acceptance of the manuscript for publication in the Series with the Stanford Press imprint, SUP will offer its standard publishing contract promptly, always provided that the terms offered shall be at the sole discretion of the publisher on a case-by-case basis.
Revision and Publication
Subsequent to acceptance of a manuscript for publication, SUP will manage all matters pertaining to revision and publication.
Promotion of Series Books:
Books in the Series are promoted through multiple avenues by Stanford University Press and the East-West Center. These may include seasonal and discipline catalogs, Series flyers, display and sale of copies and program advertisements at academic conferences, mailing of review copies to and advertisements in appropriate scholarly journals, and mailing of examination copies when requested by potential adopters.
