Summary

Thailand has experienced great political upheaval since the rise of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2001. Many Thais hope that the new prime minister can end more than three years of sharp polarization and instability in the country's politics, but the possibility of instability and conflict remains. Danny Unger describes recent conflicts in Thai politics and the prospects for the future.
