Asia-Pacific-U.S. Urban Dialogue
Summary of Past Programs
  • Changing Cities: Linking Global Knowledge to Local Action
    1758 26-28 September 2011
    East-West Center
    Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

Co-convened by the Penn Institute for Urban Research, University of Pennslyvania. The 3-day seminar explored ways to more effectively disseminate knowledge on best practices aimed at driving resilient and inclusive urban development across Asia and the West.  The seminar was organized around five key areas of urban policy and practice: (1) planning and land use, (2) energy and transportation, (3) economic growth, (4) water and public health, and (5) governance and management.  Discussion papers were commissioned in each of the areas. These papers detailed policy and/or practitioner work that has achieved some success and discussed issues related to the dissemination of the specialized knowledge gained. • Urbanization Policy in an Uncertain Economy
    1759 29-31 March 2010
    East-West Center
    Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

The 3-day program focused specifically on the short- and long-term structural changes in urbanization and governance policies, strategies, and actions taking place in cities throughout Asia and the United States as they continue to adjust to global economic uncertainties. The seminar examined how urban centers and metropolitan regions are adapting to current economic realities while simultaneously preparing for future growth. Two public forums were held in conjunction with the seminar, Cities Rising and UN State of the World's Cities. To learn more about the seminar, click here.

The 3-day program examined current trends of urban growth and decentralization and policy implications for Asian cities. As urbanization and economic growth in Asia have increased, so have political and administrative pressures to decentralize government decision-making and transfer service delivery from central government to local government. The challenge to both national leadership and local governments across the region is to develop decentralization policies and processes that fit country conditions and benefit from regional and global lessons of decentralization. Sponsored by the East-West Center Asia-Pacific-U.S. Urban Dialogue program and the Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Development Studies. The 3-day workshop examined critical issues impacting the master plan for Ho Chi Minh City. Participants addressed both public and private sector interests and the challenges of development and urbanization, focusing on the current economic, social, and environmental issues in the city.
