Benjamin Fairfield has served as an Americorps (Hawaii 2004-5) and Peace Corps (Thailand 2007-9) volunteer, was an EWC Graduate Degree Fellow (2010-12), and earned his MA and PhD in Music (Ethnomusicology) from the University of Hawaiʻi. These and his database management experience in the non-profit world he brings to the Award Services office, where he coordinates online applications, web content, and Award Services communications. 

He also serves as affiliate faculty at UHM (Music Department and Center for Southeast Asian Studies), and his ongoing research focuses on music in Chiang Mai with an emphasis on Karen communities in northern Thailand. His research, including works co-authored with Karen scholar Dr. Suwichan Phatthanaphraiwan, has been published in Ethnomusicology, the Malaysian Journal of MusicEthnomusicology TranslationsAsian Music, and Ethnomusicology Review.
