Lance Devreaux Jackson is a Programs Coordinator at the East-West Center in Washington. He supports the Center’s mission by managing the Asia Pacific Bulletin. He also works on several Southeast Asia-focused projects and an educational initiative on US policy in the Asia-Pacific.
Before joining the East-West Center, Lance promoted the United States as the world’s premier investment destination to greenfield investors in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa as an International Trade Specialist with the US Department of Commerce. Early in his career, he worked in political compliance and interned at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Albright Stonebridge Group, and the Asia Society Southern California.
Lance gravitated toward commercial affairs during graduate school as his interest in public diplomacy and Southeast Asia naturally converged within the topics of international trade, investment promotion, and regional integration. After completing the coursework for a Master of Arts in Public Diplomacy in 2015, Lance was awarded a Boren fellowship to research Southeast Asian regional institutions at the University of Malaya in Malaysia, where he earned a second Master’s in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Studies. He completed his undergraduate studies at Hawaii Pacific University, double majoring in international affairs and public relations.
Lance has spent a significant amount of time in Asia. Over the course of his academic career, he completed a Critical Language Scholarship in Indonesia and studied abroad in South Korea and Thailand. Lance has also been fortunate enough to travel to Shanghai, Hong Kong, Myanmar, and Taiwan.
Lance credits his interest in Asia to training in martial arts and watching anime during his formative years. Currently, he trains in Thai boxing (Muay Thai) and Filipino martial arts. Lance is proud to call Kansas City, MO, his hometown.
