Nurul Amalina Che Ariffin Nurul Amalina Che Ariffin

Amalina Ariffin is the Experiential Programs Specialist at the East West Center, focusing on capacity building initiatives especially on environmental issues in Southeast Asia, after becoming a YSEALI Academic Fellow and an award recipient for the YSEALI Seeds for the Future grant. She helped to run the UNESCO endorsed program “Southeast Asian Ocean Professionals Program” Dialogue, US State Department funded Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) virtual and residential programs as well as the YSEALI Alumni Workshop in Bali.

Amalina was formerly the Malaysian Coordinator of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) at the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur where she chaired the US Embassy Green Council KL and received the Eagle Award and Public Diplomacy Mission Award during her tenure. She organized multiple regional workshops for youth across Southeast Asia such as the Empowering Southeast Asian Educators Workshop, Advocacy & Strategic Communications, Good Governance & Civil Society as well as Digital Connectivity. She also ran YSEALI Boot Camp, a national youth leadership boot camp to expose university students from rural outskirts to leadership opportunities and encourage community projects across ten states in Malaysia. Amalina also spends time community building as a 2020 Asia-Pacific Obama Leaders fellow, and as a content contributor for Zero Waste Malaysia and Makiki Community Garden.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the International Islamic University Malaysia and has a Professional Diploma in Translation. As a university student, she co-founded Chili Padi Academy, an environmental accelerator for school students after she returned from her YSEALI Academic Fellowship at the East-West Center in 2015.
