Ambassador Robert A. Riley joined the Center in August 2020 as Director of Management Operations and was named Chief Operating Officer in March 2022. 

A career member of the US Senior Foreign Service, he completed his assignment as US Ambassador to the Federated State of Micronesia in January 2020 and retired from the foreign service in April 2020. Bob is a key member of the East-West Center leadership team responsible for maintaining and advancing the Center’s operational effectiveness and implementing innovative management processes. With more than 35 years of experience in management positions, he is recognized as an effective negotiator and team leader who has successfully coordinated a broad range of mission-wide programs. He has served in management positions at embassies in Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Pakistan, Iraq, France, and Spain, among others. Earlier in his career, he served in the Peace Corps in Washington, DC, Mali, and Gabon, in volunteer and staff positions. 

Ambassador Riley earned a BA from Yale University in 1979 and has received numerous US State Department performance awards. He speaks French and Spanish.
