Kyaw Yin Hlaing

Kyaw Yin Hlaing was the recipient of the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, which provides $90,000 in funding towards graduate studies. He will pursue his PhD at Cornell University in its Government Department.

Yuuna Mathew

Yuuna Mathew (Art, 1997) recently published her new book, An Introduction to Probability: A Concise Exploration of Core Concepts. Her book is available in print and e-book formats on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Bella Galhos

Bella Galhos was recently listed in BBC's 100 Women list for her work as a political activist in Timor-Leste. The list honors the work of 100 inspiring and inspirational women around the world in 2023. Bella played a key role in transforming Timor-Leste, and currently focuses on women's economic empowerment and is a strong voice for the LGBTQ+ community.


Alan Miller

The News Literacy Project, founded by Alan Miller (Political Science, 1978), received the highest honor from the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Program, the David M. Rubenstein Prize. The David M. Rubenstein Prize goes to an organization that has shown an “exceptional and sustained” commitment to advancing literacy while meeting “the highest standards of excellence in its operations and services.” The awards are given annually on Sept. 8, which UNESCO has designated as International Literacy Day.

Thinley Choden

Thinley Choden (Asia Pacific Leadership Program, 2003) was recently named an Echidna Global Scholar. The Echidna Global Scholars Program at the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at Brookings seeks to catalyze and amplify the impact of local leaders working to advance gender-transformative education across the Global South. Thinley, CEO of Centre for Sustainability Studies, leads a portfolio of initiatives at the nexus of women, climate, youth, and entrepreneurship.

Anusha Bharadwaj

Anusha Bharadwaj (Asia Pacific Leadership Program, 2014) was recently named an Echidna Global Scholar. The Echidna Global Scholars Program at the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at Brookings seeks to catalyze and amplify the impact of local leaders working to advance gender-transformative education across the Global South. Anusha, Executive Director of Voice 4 Girls, believes in the power of adolescent and youth leadership to transform communities and nations.

Ferth Manaysay

Ferth Manaysay (Education Program, 2015) has recently been awarded a full-ride scholarship to study Environmental Policy and Regulation at the London School of Economics (LSE) for his Master of Science. Following his time as a student at the East-West Center in 2015, he was also the Innovation for Sustainable Development Fellow in 2021, where he worked on a collaborative project with the EWC and The Climate Reality Project that supported youth-led climate solutions.

Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian

Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian (Jefferson Fellow, 2016) entered the East-West Center’s Journalism Program for the Jefferson Fellowship in 2016. She is currently the China reporter and journalist at Axios focusing on China’s impending influence across international sectors. Her upcoming book, Beijing Rules: How China Weaponized Its Economy to Confront the World, releases in August 2023. Before working at Axios, she was the lead reporter for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists’ China Cables project. Her work on this project led her to receive the Robert D.G. Lewis Watchdog Award in 2019, a top achievement among international journalists.

Mary K. Chang

Mary Chang (Education, 2015) was a student affiliate at the East-West Center while earning her PhD in Educational Foundations at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Her dissertation was recently published as a book, Teaching, Tenure, and Collegiality: Confucian Relationality in an Age of Measurable Outcomes in 2022. 

A. Reza Hoshmand

Reza Hoshmand (Intercultural Interchange, 1971) recently wrote Service Leadership: Leading with Competence, Character, and Care in the Service Economy in 2021. This book was co-authored with Po Chung and published by Routledge in 2022. It introduces the concept of the 3C’s of leadership in the service economy and shows that when combined, creates an environment of trust within and outside the organization. The book is an interdisciplinary text that combines theoretical elements from leadership, literature, philosophy, psychology, sociology, economics, and political science into a framework that is more relevant to the 21st century service economy.  

Wayne Stein

Wayne Stein (Asian Studies Development Program, 2018) is a current Professor of Cinema and Asian and World Literature in the English Department at the University of Central Oklahoma. In 2021 he made contributions to “Spiral into Samsara in Junji Ito’s Masterpiece ‘Uzumaki’ in Japanese Horror: Critical Essays on Film, Literature, Anime, Video Games. He is currently contributing to 3 other publications that are to be released in 2023

Abdul Jabbar

Abdul Jabbar (Asian Studies Development Program, 1997) recently published a book titled, Not of an Age, but for All Time: Revolutionary Humanism in Iqbal, Manto, and Faiz. The book was published by Peter Lang International Publisher.  

Cindy Yoshiko Shirata

Cindy Yoshiko Shirata (EWC/EWCA 2010 50th Anniversary International Conference, 2010) received the Top 50 Professional and Career Women Global Award in the field of leadership in the fields of finance and accounting.

Karen Chappell

Karen Chappell (Overseas Operation Program, 1965) on received The Arts Champion/Special Recognition Award from the Iowa Arts Council at The Governor's Arts Awards at a ceremony in Des Moines. The award highlights an individual, team or organization that has taken an active role in building a sustainable and thriving ecosystem for the arts in Iowa. The award was given for her work with Film Scene, an independent art cinema in Iowa City.  Karen was the Founding Chair of Film Scene, and has received their Visionary Supporter Award.  She was also Co-Chair of the Strengthen Grow Evolve Campaign, which raised 5.6 M for Film Scene and The Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City.
