Take 530 people of all ages from 45 different countries and put them together for three days of meetings and fellowship in one of the most beautiful, exciting, and friendliest places in the world and what do you get? The 2008 EWCA International Conference in Bali, Indonesia! The 2008 Conference was one of the most successful conferences we have held since we last met in Bali twenty years ago.
The Chapter Leaders Workshop took place over the two days just before the conference. The thirty-one chapter leaders in attendance discussed a range of issues centered on the EWCA Strategic Plan: how to best support the EWC, how to energize our Chapters, and how to use 21 stcentury technology to communicate more effectively within the EWC/EWCA community. A number of great ideas were shared ranging from ways to raise funds to support participants (focusing on the recent successes by our Thai and Okinawa chapters), to public service projects, to encouraging interested chapters to work together on a climate change project suggested by the Brisbane Chapter, to seeking out within each chapter a tech-savvy person who would help their technology-challenged colleagues connect more efficiently through such social networking tools as the East-West Center Community and Face Book.
The conference began with our traditional Roll Call of Participants lead by K.K. Poh (Chair of the EWCA) and we during the course of the conference we were enlightened by excellent speeches from Indonesia’s Minister of Women’s Empowerment, the Governor of Bali, the U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia, Linda Lingle (Governor of the State of Hawaii), Thomas Farrell (Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Academic Programs, U.S. Department of State), Puongpun Sananikone (Chair, EWC Board of Governors), Dr. Charles Morrison (President of the EWC), and Dr. Lawrence Foster (President of the EWCA).
There was a program for everyone’s interests: health, religion, education, music, culture, business, human rights, economics, social justice leadership, philanthropy, the media, the environment, globalization, governance & democracy, as well as women’s economic and social progress.
A number of alumni were honored for their accomplishments and service to the EWCA: U Maung Maung, Joe Overton, Didin Sastrapradja, Claire Richmond, A. Seshan, Dennis Zvinakis, Kuldeep Mathur, and Riley Lee. Two chapters shared the outstanding alumni chapter award: Bangkok, Thailand and Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The social events were highlighted by an opening dinner and Indonesian entertainment hosted by Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a UH-Alumni reception hosted by Dr. Virginia Hinshaw (Chancellor, University of Hawaii at Manoa), and the closing Aloha Dinner with Indonesian music and dance arranged by alumnus Garrett Kam.
