The East-West Center is excited to announce a second cross-border journalism workshop and collaborative reporting series, January 7-13, 2024, in Kathmandu, Nepal for ten Pakistani and ten Indian journalists experienced in reporting on climate issues. Applications are due October 9, 2023.

Program

Collaborative Reporting Projects

  • Journalists from the two countries will work together as teams on a collaborative cross-border media story to be published or broadcast in both countries by April 14, 2024.
  • Stories may be printed or broadcast in local languages as well as English.
  • Collaborative reporting projects must focus on climate change and sustainability. Stories can link to economy and trade, health, environment, natural resources, agriculture, youth, underserved populations and indigenous groups, and other areas.
  • Projects must include discussions of cross-border climate solutions as well as shared challenges.
  • Each cross-border team will start to map out stories in virtual workshops before the Kathmandu gathering, where project plans will be completed.

Workshop in Kathmandu

Expert US and Asian media workshop leaders will conduct sessions on best practices in reporting on climate change and its impact, climate solutions, and sustainability; reporting that meets high professional standards; cross-border collaboration techniques; multimedia skills to be applied to cross-border stories; data-based reporting and visualization; peace journalism principles applied to cross-border reporting; and other skills.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a working print, broadcast, or online journalist from Pakistan and India.
  • Possess at least 5 years of journalism experience including substantive reporting on climate issues.
  • Have the ability to communicate in English during the Kathmandu workshop.

Application

Applicants must submit each of the following documents to be considered:

  • The online 2024 Cross-Border Journalism Workshop application form.
  • A letter of interest (maximum 3 pages, double-spaced).
  • Résumé or Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages).
  • An employer's statement of support completed by the applicant's supervisor/employer indicating that the applicant has permission to attend the workshop (does not apply to freelance journalists).
  • At least three (3) representative examples of climate reporting from the past 12 months.
  • Two (2) professional references with letters of recommendation.

Participant Obligations

  • Attend 2-3 pre-workshop virtual sessions.
  • Complete a collaborative story plan with cross-border teammate by end of the Kathmandu workshop. Plans must include reporting responsibilities of each team member, deadlines, knowledgeable and diverse information sources and interviews, multimedia and visuals, etc.
  • Upon return to home countries, continue to collaborate with teammate, complete cross-border story, and have commitments for publication or broadcast in each country by April 14, 2024.
  • Meet program deadlines.
  • Join and be an active contributor to the cross-border WhatsApp group.
  • Complete program surveys and evaluations.
