The Education Leadership Institute

The Education Leadership Institute, offered once each year, is focused on meeting the enormous challenges that will face higher education in the Asia-Pacific region over the next 12-15 years. The powerful social, economic and cultural changes occurring in the region will compel corresponding changes in how education is conceived, organized and delivered. The Education Leadership Institute is designed to meet this challenge. During the two-week Institute, participants will develop collaborative teams that continue to interact for the year following the Institute.

Focused on working with emerging leaders in higher education, each institute brings together a cohort of some twenty individuals from as many as ten countries. Most are drawn directly from higher educational environments, but others may represent the media, government, business, and the arts. Selection will include both public and private sectors, and is normally made on the basis of nomination by affiliated individuals. IFE 2020 will also consider self-nominations.

The Leadership Institute uses a curriculum that is constantly up-dated by research emerging from the annual senior seminars. Each institute is keyed to the topic of the previous senior seminar while also building on the cumulative results of all previous seminars. The institutes progressively build a group of educational leaders engaged in addressing critical issues in their respective countries and linked to a regional network of fellow alumni. From time to time regional meetings of IFE 2020 leadership institute alumni are conducted in country settings, often involving an expanded set of participants. Regional meetings of Institute alumni were initiated in Bali in November 2008 and will continue on a regular basis.

Leadership institutes have been held in September 2005 (Emerging Paradigms in Education), September 2007 (Public and Private Forces in Higher Education), and February 2008 (Quality Issues in Higher Education). A fourth institute was held February 21-March 7, 2009 (Access, Equity and Capacity in Higher Education). To date all leadership institutes have been held at the East-West Center in Honolulu. Institutes in the planning stage for late-2010 and 2011 will be conducted in the region. Countries participating in IFE 2020 Leadership Institutes to date include:  China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, United States and Vietnam.
