Talking Story: Mary & Liz Talking Story: Mary & Liz

This Humans of EWC installment is a double feature highlighting the free community yoga classes offered on the Friendship Circle lawn by Liz Liew (Graduate Degree Fellow, Masters in International Asian Affairs) and Mary Bannister (Student Affiliate, Anthropology masters student). Their classes encourage holistic well-being while transforming physical spaces on EWC campus into places of community and reflection.

Graduate school can be really stressful because you're spending all your time studying and thinking and you can get very caught up in your head, disconnected from how your body is feeling. And your surroundings even! It is easy to get trapped in your thoughts, which is not always the most positive, healthy place to be.

Yoga is a good opportunity to be not just in your head, but in your body, and also notice the space and the people around you.

One of the things that’s been important to me as a yoga teacher is to continue showing compassion to myself and to the community. I do a little universal prayer called metta bhavana... it's a short meditation of universal love.

Yoga is about connecting with your body, connecting with your breath, and having an introspective journey so you're able to feel and be aware of all the different sensations and connect...that physical awareness translates into self awareness over time.
