In-person In-person

Join us on October 21 as Dr. Mary Therese Perez Hattori, Director, Pacific Islands Development Program, participates in a panel discussion, 1898: US Imperial Visions & Revisions–And Their Impact Today. Part of the 2023 Hawai'i Book and Music Festival (HBMF) weekend of events, in-person and online.

This is the 125th anniversary of 1898, the fateful moment when America leapt its continental bounds to acquire an overseas empire, including Hawai'i, the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico and Cuba. Scholarship in Hawai'i developed in the 1993-1998 period advanced the public understanding of this history, recently recognized by the National Portrait Galleryʻs exhibit “1898 Imperialism, Visions and Revisions.”

This panel will further examine how imperialism affects us today, and HBMF is proud to launch a year-long program that will include a traveling exhibit, a documentary film, lectures, panels, and international conferencing linking Hawai'i to scholars across the Pacific and the Caribbean.

Panelists:

Veronica Alporpha
Tom Coffman
Kealani Cook
Mary Therese Perez Hattori
