The 2013 Asia Pacific Dance Festival reflects on the theme of journeys and the many journeys that we take in life, geographically, culturally, and otherwise. The dance companies in our featured concerts have taken these journeys and bring us a diverse selection of dance from their individual traditions as well as from a more contemporary viewpoint.

As a follow up to the Festival concerts, we invite you to join us for a discussion featuring Deborah Jowitt, Steve Villaruz, and the leaders of our visiting dance companies (New Zealand`s Atamira, Taipei National University of the Arts, and Hālau Nā Kamalei O Līlīlehua.

Jowitt, a dancer and choreographer in her own right, began a regular column for The Village Voice in 1967 and continued her writing up to today in The New York Times, Dance Magazine, and Ballet Review to name a few. She is the recipient of a 'Bessie' for her contributions to dance criticism.

Villaruz is professor emeritus of the University of the Philippines. He designed and was artistic director for the UP Dance Company. He has contributed to dance criticism through numerous articles and books. The Asia Pacific Dance Festival is quickly becoming the premiere Festival of dance in the region and will continue that tradition with this series of events.

The Asia Pacific Dance Festival is a co-production of the East-West Center Arts Program and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Outreach College. Funding is provided by the Friends of Asia Pacific Dance Festival, the Hawaii Council for the Humanities, Hawaii Pacific Rim Society, Mayor`s Office on Culture and the Arts, New Zealand Consulate, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Honolulu, Taiwan Academy Los Angeles, Taiwan Ministry of Culture, contributors to the EWC Foundation including Members of the Arts Ohana, and UH Mānoa Center for Philippine Studies, Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Student Activity Program Fee Board, Student Athletic Fee Committee, Music Department and Department of Theatre & Dance.
