The 2018 SUSI-YSEALI Institute for National Resource Managers or INRM, is an invitation only event that will bring 21 young leaders from 10 Southeast Asian countries to study innovative solutions to 21st century environmental challenges. Participants are competitively selected from U.S. Embassies in Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The first two weeks take place in Washington, DC, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Yosemite national park, followed by the final three weeks in Hawai‘i.

Participants learn about the environment through experiential methods and build leadership skills through active learning. They work in teams with US businesses, NGOs, and government agencies to design innovation labs, crowdfunding campaigns, challenge prizes, accelerators, and leadership retreats that can then be delivered with community partners in their home communities. A key outcome of the institute is to implement home country initiatives. An EWC Impact Incubator supports alumni teams pilot small initiatives that can lead to larger proposals for the U.S. State Department Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund grants ($25,000) and YSEALI Seeds for the Future grants ($20,000).
