The U.S. bases in Okinawa are the only place where there are regular, continuous demonstrations against U.S. facilities, now mostly protesting construction of a new Marine “replacement facility” at Henoko. It is commonly observed that most protestors are elderly. But what do younger Okinawans think of the presence of the U.S. bases? Having grown up with the base presence and in the face of a changing security environment, are their views different? Through an on-line survey instrument, interviews, and focus groups, an East-West Center (EWC) research project provides a snapshot of views of Okinawans between the ages of 18 and 45.
Charles E. Morrison has a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and is a Distinguished Senior Fellow and former President at EWC. Dr. Morrison works on regional security and economic issues.
Daniel Chinen has a B.A. from the University of Hawaii and an M.A. from Arizona State University in electrical engineering. He has taught English and STEM courses in Okinawa for the past decade. Chinen serves as the EWC liaison in Okinawa.
