Recognizing Hawaii’s Contributions to the International Visitor Leadership Program

When: Nov 16 2017 - 5:30pm until Nov 16 2017 - 7:30pm
Where: East-West Center Gallery, John A. Burns Hall, 1601 East-West Road
What:

Join us for a relaxed evening of conversation and pupus with ten New Zealand-based leaders participating in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), the U.S. Department of State's premier professional exchange program.  Representing diverse Pacific cultures and fields of expertise (including journalism, business and finance, health, education, and community-building), these leaders were selected by the U.S. Embassy in Wellington to partake in the IVLP for their commitment to strengthening their local communities and U.S.-Pacific collaboration.

During this reception, PAAC will also recognize Hawaii’s volunteer network of organizations and individuals who share their time, expertise, and aloha with IVLP participants.  These citizen
diplomats provide home hospitality, help to arrange professional meetings, and participate in fruitful discussion with visitors.  By helping to foster this exchange, they are helping to bridge trust and empathy across nations, one handshake at a time.

About the International Visitor Leadership Program:
IVLP began in the U.S. in 1940, bringing current and emerging foreign leaders to the United States to meet with their professional counterparts.  The program is designed to promote
collaboration and mutual understanding between the U.S. and countries throughout the world.  PAAC plans and arranges local appointments for leaders visiting Hawaii.  In fiscal year 2017, PAAC will have hosted 88 visitors from 29 countries.

The ten-member delegation is comprised of the following Pacific leaders:

  • Mr. Peter Faafiu, Amnesty International New Zealand
  • Ms. Laura Hall, Ministry for Pacific Peoples
  • Mr. Koroi Hawkins, Radio New Zealand Pacific
  • Mr. Staverton Kautoke, Pasifika Medial Association
