The 20th Party Congress and Xi Jinping’s Politics in a Command Economy

featuring
Dexter Tiff Roberts
Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council

As the Chinese Communist Party prepares for its big meeting in Beijing, Xi Jinping shows no sign of backing away from his heavy-handed pursuit of Zero Covid or statist vision for China's future. At the same time, a host of challenges including soaring youth unemployment, cash-strapped and leveraged local governments, and an economy in decline, are testing China and could derail Xi Jinping 's ambitious plans.

China Seminars

The China Seminar was established by Dr. Daniel W.Y. Kwok in 1977. Under his guidance, it became a signature program of the Friends of the East-West Center (FEWC) in 2009. The program provides an informal venue for China experts, such as scholars, diplomats, and journalists, to present talks on aspects of China that interest the community and members of the Friends.
