Folded treasures from the In the Folds folding workshop

OFFICE/DEPARTMENT

Join us for a hands-on workshops to make a folded treasure to add to a community installation in our gallery! Create any unique folded treasure you know how to make or learn a new technique with the help of our experienced volunteers.

The In the Folds exhibition explores how traditional folding practices draw people together, strengthen existing community connections, and create new communities.

Learn to make a folded treasure with volunteers from Temari Hawai‘i and the Sadako Peace Crane Project at this special folding workshop. Visitors can take a treasure home and leave on behind to participate in our East-West Center community installation. We encourage visitors to include a special note on their folded treasure to manifest positivity in 2023 and beyond, and let us know where they are visiting from.

Following the workshop, featured artists will be presenting about their artistic background, experience, and artistic work.

In the Folds is presented in partnership with Temari Hawai‘i and features works demonstrating folding traditions, techniques, and practices from across the Asia-Pacific region. Traditional works are displayed in juxtaposition with contemporary expressions by Hawai‘i-based artists including Arisa Terlaje Barcinas, Kamalu du Preez, Lynn Martin Graton, Vilsoni Hereniko, Marques Hanalei Marzan, Marcia Morse, and Sara Oka.
