Monday, January 23, 2023

12:00 - 1:00 PM HST

Hybrid: Virtual & In-Person at East-West Center

Speaker’s Summary:
The dynamic development of the Pacific region in recent years also has implications for Germany and Europe - in terms of climate, trade and security policy. Germany decided to make a long-term political commitment to the region which is reflected in the Indo-Pacific Guidelines published in September 2020. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s visit to Palau in July 2002 and Germany’s accession to “Partners in the Blue Pacific” further underlined Germany’s commitment to the region.

Germany’s first Special Envoy to the Pacific Island States, Ambassador Beate Grzeski, will discuss Germany’s perspectives and priorities in the Pacific Region and the perspectives for future German engagement in the region. Ambassador Grzeski took up her posting in 2022 and is currently based in Canberra. You can follow her on Twitter @GermanyPacific.

Ambassador Beate Grzeski has a long and distinguished career with Germany's Federal Foreign Office. In September 2022, she was named Germany's Special Envoy for the Pacific Islands States and is posted at the German Embassy in Canberra, Australia. Prior to being appointed Special Envoy, she served as Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Moscow from 2017 to 2022.
