Imperfect Partners: The United States and Southeast Asia

featuring
Scot Marciel, Oksenberg-Rohlen Fellow, Stanford University Walter H. Shorenstein Asia Pacific Research Center

Speaker's view: Ambassador Scot Marciel spent most of his 37-year diplomatic career working in and on Southeast Asia, a critical region of rising economic and geopolitical importance.  His important new book – “Imperfect Partners: The United States and Southeast Asia” – combines substantial research and analysis with illuminating anecdotes based on his own extensive experience to explain the ups and downs in U.S. relations with key partners in the region over the past 3-4 decades. “Imperfect Partners” also offers realistic and timely recommendations on how to strengthen U.S.-Southeast Asian ties in this era of U.S.-China competition.

Ambassador Marciel will discuss how and why U.S.- Southeast Asian relations have brought both benefits and disappointments on both sides of the Pacific. He will also comment on the latest trends and developments in the region, while making the case that the U.S. can best advance its strategic interests by engaging the region on its own merits rather than by viewing it through the prism of China policy.

Scot Marciel is the Oksenberg-Rohlen Fellow at Stanford University’s Walter H. Shorenstein Asia Pacific Research Center and a Senior Advisor at BowerGroupAsia.  He retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in April 2022 after a 37-year career that included assignments as Ambassador to Myanmar, Ambassador to Indonesia, and Ambassador for ASEAN Affairs.  He also served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs and in U.S. Missions in the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Turkey, and Brazil.  Scot is the author of the new book, Imperfect Partners:  The United States and Southeast Asia. A native of Fremont, California, he holds an MA from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and a BA from the University of California at Davis.
