Immediately after the 2004 earthquake and tsunami which devastated Indonesia’s Aceh Province, as well as neighboring countries in the region, the East-West Center and UH- Mānoa took action to assist in the re-establishment of educational foundations in Aceh. This has led to an ongoing collaborative relationship between higher educational institutions in Hawai‘i and Aceh.

This performance celebrates the impressive rebuilding and recovery which has taken place in the succeeding years.

The evening’s repertoire will include two famous Acehnese dances:  “Tiga Serengkai,” a Melayu style celebrating the land and history of Aceh, and  “Saman,” an impressive and energetic dance from the Gayo region that in 2011 was designated an Intangible World Heritage by UNESCO. The program will also include a Javanese solo female dance, “Golek Kenyoe Tinembi.”

Presented by the East-West Center and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
