Mega-Regionalism - New Challenges for Trade and Innovation

This is a listing of older East-West Center events (newer listed first).  See Events to get the list of current or upcoming events.

When: Jan 20 2016 (All day) until Jan 21 2016 (All day)
Where: John A. Burns Hall, East-West Center

An Agenda-setting workshop co-funded by the National Science Foundation and the East-West Center

This initial workshop in the East-West Center New Challenges for Trade and Innovation workshop series will focus on emerging trends in Megaregional Trade Agreements, like the Transpacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, and their impact on innovation. Given the comprehensive nature of these emerging accords and the likely ubiquitous implications for innovation, the workshop will bring together trade economists with experts on innovation, intellectual property rights, competition law, technical standards, and industrial development.

To create maximum space for multi-disciplinary discussion, the workshop is structured around invited Think Pieces (about 10 pages each) which highlight important under-researched topics, and which lay out possible agendas for policy-related research. Invited speakers will come from the U.S., Asia and Europe.

The East-West Center New Challenges for Trade and Innovation workshop will continue to meet once or twice per year, dividing these meetings between the East-West Center and a partner institution in Asia. These subsequent meetings will invite speakers to produce Research Papers and Policy Papers on a select number of key issues that have been identified during the initial workshop. The final product of this series of workshops will be a book to be published by a reputable publisher with an excellent distribution network and market reputation.
