Launched last February by EWC President Richard R. Vuylsteke, the Leadership Outreach Initiative is an exploration into how the East-West Center can build on the foundations of our successful Hawai‘i and DC-based programs to develop a sustainable and meaningful presence in Asia.

The work to date has involved extensive research, in-depth interviews with almost 200 stakeholders, test workshops with some 400 participants, and the identification of a regional network of over 50 facilitators. New and deeper partnerships have been developed with regional organizations and multiple initial training projects are ongoing.  However, the greatest yield has been the unexpected learnings about regional trends and needs – and the EWC itself.

Four key learnings will form the basis of discussion.  After a brief review of the process to date, the main areas to be covered are: a) the “EWC Brand” in Asia; b) topical themes which attracted the most interest; c) “Asia and Leadership” (at personal, national, and global levels); and d) how we  may be in a new era – one that may require a shift in how the Center works with the region.
