Opening Festivities: Flower Traditions in Hawai

This is a listing of older East-West Center events (newer listed first).  See Events to get the list of current or upcoming events.

When: Jun 3 2007 (All day)
Where: East-West Center Gallery

2:00-4:00 p.m.

Featuring demonstrations by Bill
Char, Gilman Hu, Stephen Fong, JoAnne Yokata, and Vilad Southammagosanl.

Using flowers and greenery to create beautiful and artistic works
is practiced in cultures throughout the world. Hawai`i is fortunate to have an
abundance of flowers, and is home to countless flower artists.

Four distinct and diverse traditions are featured in this

  • Hawaiian lei making, featuring haku works by Bill Char;
  • Japanese ikebana flower arrangements by Elsie Tanaka of the
    Ikenobu School;
  • Chinese narcissus carving by Gilman Hu; and
  • Lao ceremonial offerings by Vilad Southammagosanl, Lao
    Buddhist Temple of Hawai`i

As keepers of their traditions, these artists and their
students and colleagues perpetuate the art forms within their communities. They
now share these traditions with those who appreciate the beauty of flowers and
the craft of flower arranging.

On weekdays visitors can enjoy flower displays, photographs by Marco Garcia,
and a video program, "Flower
Traditions of Hawai`i,"
by Layla Schuster and Hawai`i Craftsmen. On three
consecutive Sundays, artists will also share their work through demonstrations
in the East-West Center Gallery.
