Toward a New Strategy of Climate Change Market and Policy Governance in Korea and Northeast Asia

Professor Park is Associate Professor with Business Strategy and Sustainability at

Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont.

The seminar is 12 noon to 1:00 p.m.

In the ten years since the adoption of the Kyoto climate change protocol in 1997, increasing scientific concerns about climate change and accelerating use of market –based policy mechanisms have brought new pressures on Korea and the Northeast Asian region to devise a new climate market and policy strategy. Recently, Korea’s Environment Ministry submitted a proposal to the new President to freeze the country’s greenhouse gas emissions at 2005 levels over the next five years in an effort to join international efforts to combat global climate change.

How and to what degree, can private companies, government agencies, and non-profit actors devise a new strategy of climate change governance in Korea and the Northeast Asian region? Professor Park will explore this question and other issues related to climate change strategy in Korea and Northeast Asia.

Professor Park is an East-West Center POSCO Visiting Fellow with Environmental Change, Vulnerability, and Governance. He has researched and written widely on global corporate environmental and social responsibility issues, with a special emphasis/interest in the Asia-Pacific region.  A recipient of the 2008 AT&T Industrial Ecology Faculty Research Award, his co-edited book, “Crisis of Global Environmental Governance: Towards a New Political Economy of Sustainability” (Routledge) was published in April 2008.
