Research Brown Bag Seminar
The Provincial Pattern of Fertility Decline in China
Senior Fellow, East-West Center
May 20, 2008, Noon – 1:00 pm
John A. Burns Hall, Room 3012, 3rd
floor
Recent studies and previous collaborative research between
the East-West Center
and China's National Bureau
of Statistics (NBS) showed that China's
fertility fell to below-replacement level in the late 1990s. So far, however,
few studies have estimated fertility trends at the provincial level. Has
fertility declined to low levels in all provinces, despite provincial
differences in enforcement of the one-child policy and large disparities in
level and pace of economic development? This presentation will provide new
findings bearing on this question, based on the just-published joint report
between the NBS and EWC on "Fertility Estimates for Provinces of China,
1975-2000".
