Where: John A. Burns Hall, Room 3121/3125, East-West Center
What:

In recent years, several regional superpowers have made it clear that a tougher trade protectionism will be their priority, which presents a challenge to the progress of Asia-Pacific regional economic integration. Should the Asia-Pacific economies maintain the cooperative momentum reflected in the proposed Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific (FTAAP)? This has become one of the most important research topics of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). Dr. Li will discuss the social-economic benefits and costs that APEC economies may face in realizing the FTAAP, and put forward several feasible strategic policy recommendations.

Dr. Wentao Li is an associate professor and full-time researcher with the China APEC Academy and APEC Study Center of Nankai University. His research projects focus on APEC’s progress towards the 1994 Bogor Goals and the development of free-trade agreements in Asia Pacific, such as the FTAAP, Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). Many of his policy suggestions have been adopted by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Commerce.
