Research Program Workshop

When: Apr 3 2014 (All day) until Apr 4 2014 (All day)
Where: Hanoi, Vietnam

In collaboration with Hanoi University of Agriculture, researchers at the East-West Center have been examining the hypothesis that risks associated with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) caused by the H5N1 virus1 can be associated with anthropogenic environmental changes produced by urbanization, agricultural change, and natural habitat alterations. This is a novel way of looking at HPAI and other health risks like it, suggesting these risks are not an accident of time and place, but rather are the product of the modernization transition. Approaching the final phase of the project, this workshop will bring together government officers from relevant ministries, academics and NGO activists to discuss the implications of this research for public health and risk communication in Vietnam.
