HONOLULU (May 4, 2018) -- The East-West Center’s Board of Governors has unanimously approved a forward-looking plan to substantially recast and rejuvenate the Center’s longstanding Pacific Islands Development Program (PIDP).
Under the plan presented to the board by EWC President Richard R. Vuylsteke, long and valuable ties with the Center for Pacific Islands Studies and other departments and programs at the University of Hawai‘i will be enhanced through more frequent engagement, dialogue, and collaboration. The recast PIDP also intends to reinvigorate the Center’s extensive alumni network in the Pacific Islands through regular engagement and involving them directly in delivering programs in the region.
One near-term priority is to secure funding to reinstate PIDP’s well-regarded online news service, the Pacific Islands Report. The goal is to have a new and improved PIR enhanced with more commentaries and analyses from researchers and other experts in the region.
The EWC Board and President expressed full support for further strengthening the Center’s relationships with heads of governments in the region through its role as secretariat for the Pacific Islands Conference of Leaders (PICL) and membership in the Council of Regional Organizations in the Pacific (CROP). In preparation for a planned PICL meeting in 2020 at which PIDP will celebrate its 40th anniversary, EWC will conduct a series of planning meetings and strategy sessions with key stakeholders and eminent persons throughout the Pacific Islands to help guide its renewed agenda.
The Pacific Islands Development Program, co-founded by then Prime Minister of Fiji Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and governor of Hawaiʻi George Ariyoshi with the support of other heads of government, was established as an informal venue for direct engagement between Pacific Islands leaders and scholars engaged in practical research to benefit the region. Over the years PIDP has conducted research in a wide variety of areas, including tuna management, disaster preparedness, private sector development, and post-conflict reconciliation, as well as pursuing an extensive range of capacity building, democracy promotion, and high-level dialogue activities.
