OFFICE/DEPARTMENT

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship provides master’s and doctoral funding for graduate students from Asia, the Pacific, and the United States to participate in educational, cultural, and residential community-building, as well as leadership development programs while attending the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM).

If you are looking to apply for graduate or doctoral studies at UHM, the Graduate Degree Fellowship can help offset the cost of tuition and fees, books, housing in an East-West Center (EWC) dormitory, and partial funding toward meals, health insurance, and incidental expenses.

The EWC Fellowship provides more than just funding. It provides a community who live, work, and grow together outside their academic studies. From planned outings to community service, to gaining experience in producing community-led events, the EWC Graduate Degree Fellowship gives its students support, funding, and friendship that can change your life and enrich your future.

The Graduate Degree Fellowship Experience

For Diliaur Tellei (2015-16), the friendships made, the support system provided, and the push to engage beyond her field of study to grow as a thinker and doer are what made the experience so meaningful to her.

An artist, photographer, and coder, Diliaur’s passion for art and science led her from Palau to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where she earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science.

In addition to the financial support, it was through the East-West Center and the Graduate Degree Fellowship, where she met many of her closest friends. They provided the support system she needed to complete her degree.

Diliaur also learned about different cultures and academic specializations that enriched her life and academic studies.

“The EWC student experience was incredibly valuable in a world that still has miles to go in diversity, equity, and inclusion, and that too often defaults to technical solutions to social problems,” she said.
