EWC Mourns Loss of Corazon Aquino, Former Philippines President
HONOLULU (July 31) - The East-West Center expresses its sympathy to the people of the Philippines, as they mourn the death of former President Corazon Aquino. "Our hearts go out to the members of Aquino's family in this time of bereavement," says EWC President Charles E. Morrison. He adds, "We will always remember Corazon Aquino for her dedication to all the people of the Philippines and for her idealism, strength, and courage in the face of opposition."

Aquino was honored with the East-West Center's Asia Pacific Community Building Award in 2004 for restoring democracy and re-establishing institutions in the Philippines in efforts to bring about economic and social reforms. With no prior political experience, she served as the first woman president of the Philippines following the tragic assassination of her husband, Benigno Aquino. "Her legacy to the world, having presided over the difficult transition from a dictatorship to a democracy," stated Morrison, "truly exemplifies the mission of the East-West Center in building a peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Pacific community.  Her loss is felt by all."
