Statement on the Death of Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe

A Message from the President of the East-West Center

Shinzo AbeAlong with the entire East-West Center community, I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. This is a tragic loss not only for Japan but also for the United States and the world. We have lost a great leader, diplomat, and champion of democratic values.

Prime Minister Abe worked tirelessly for security and prosperity in our region, leaving an indelible legacy. He advanced the concept of a “Free and Open” Indo-Pacific, spearheaded the Quad of large regional democracies, and led the creation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement.

At home, Prime Minister Abe was instrumental in Japan's economic recovery and advancement. His Womenomics Policy supported female leadership in Japanese industry and government. EWC researchers and analysts continue to study Prime Minister Abe's visionary policies for the lessons they hold.

Our hearts and prayers are with Prime Minister Abe's ‘ohana and all our friends in Japan.

With a heavy heart,

Suzanne Vares-Lum
