The East-West Center and the US Embassy Wellington present:

The US Indo-Pacific Strategy Education Toolkit

The East-West Center in Washington is pleased to announce the launch of our US Indo-Pacific Strategy Education Toolkit.

In collaboration with the US Embassy in Wellington, we are running a 6-week long educational training for 20 university students from the Washington, DC area on the United States’ Indo-Pacific Strategy, beginning approximately mid-March and ending approximately early May 2023.

The educational course is free of cost, and students will receive a certificate of achievement from the East-West Center upon successful completion of the course. The course will be overseen by one of two facilitators: Prof. Ambassador Piper Campbell from American University or Prof. Kuniko Ashizawa from American and George Washington University.

The 6 modules of our educational toolkit are titled as follows:

  1. Introduction to US Indo-Pacific Statecraft
  2. US Foreign Policy: Values and Accountability
  3. Regional Economic Connectivity and Infrastructure
  4. Climate Change
  5. Maritime Security and Connectivity; and
  6. Regional Multilateralism: Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Centrality and the Indo-Pacific Quadrilateral Dialogue (Quad)

Each module includes short readings and videos, followed by an in-person activity/debate and discussion session with the facilitator.

We plan for students to complete 1 module per week (online), followed by an in-person discussion of around 1-1.5 hour(s), hosted by a facilitator. We expect students to devote 3 hours per week to successfully complete the course.

As part of the same project, we will also be hosting a conference in Washington, DC to convene policymakers, academics, and experts for a discussion on the US Indo-Pacific Strategy on March 14, 2023. Students will be invited as virtual observers to this conversation, which is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the United States' Indo-Pacific policy from the perspective of practitioners.

The conference will include an impressive gathering of policymakers, senior officials from the United States government, academics, think-tank representatives from the DMV area, and experts from the United States and abroad.

Please let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to receiving applications from students and kindly request that you share this announcement with the application link to those who may be interested in applying!
