Renewal of US Compact with the Marshall Islands Signed at EWC Renewal of US Compact with the Marshall Islands Signed at EWC

East-West Center was honored to host the long-anticipated signing of extended Compact of Free Association agreements between the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the United States on Oct. 16. Under the 20-year extension, the US would contribute $2.3 billion over the next 20 years in grants and trust-fund contributions, according to news sources. However, the agreements must still be approved by the US Congress and Marshalls Parliament to take effect.

In addition to the two agreement signatories, US Special Presidential Envoy for Compact Negotiations Joseph Yun and RMI Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Jack Ading, special guests at the signing ceremony included Marshall Islands President David Kabua and Chief Negotiator Phillip Muller, US Department of the Interior Assistant Secretary for Insular and International Affairs Carmen G. Cantor, US Congressman Ed Case and Hawai‘i Governor Josh Green.

EWC President Suzanne Vares-Lum offered welcoming remarks prior to the signing at Imin Conference Center, noting the many historic events and world leaders the I.M. Pei-designed landmark has hosted over the last six decades.
