EWC 2020-21 Annual Report Released EWC 2020-21 Annual Report Released

The East-West Center has released its 2020-21 Annual Report, featuring a striking new digital format and thematic focus. The 22-page report includes a graphic timeline highlighting EWC milestones during the pandemic, and a separate Reach & Impact Report offering comprehensive statistics and infographics on the Center’s engagement and outreach.

The report highlights the ways the Center community has risen to the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years, including:

  • Expanding impact through online events that have reached more than 115,000 viewers
  • Providing safe shelter and welfare to our residents as the Center’s student housing remained open
  • Supporting emerging leaders through innovative remote programming
  • Increasing engagement in the Pacific by hosting a virtual summit of the Pacific Islands Conference of Leaders and a variety of other initiatives under the revitalized Pacific Islands Development Program
  • Providing expert analysis on issues ranging from pandemic policies and climate impacts to international policy in the Arctic and water conflicts on the Mekong

'Deepened commitment'

In their introduction to the report, EWC Board of Governors Chairman Dr. James Scott and EWC President Dr. Richard R. Vuylsteke write that during the pandemic "the East-West Center community has responded with a deepened commitment to our mission. Indeed, many of our work priorities in the region, including climate change adaptation, sustainable economic development, promoting free and open civil societies, and increased health and food security, became even more critical in the context of the pandemic and other developments." In addition, they observe, the pandemic has "changed dramatically what it means to 'bring people together.'"
