Passing of Dr. Allen Clark, Director of the Professional Development Program Passing of Dr. Allen Clark, Director of the Professional Development Program
A Message from the President of the East-West Center

I am deeply saddened to report that our colleague Dr. Allen Clark, Director of the Professional Development Program and 36-year member of the EWC staff, passed away unexpectedly on May 29, 2021, while vacationing with family in Montana.

During his years at the Center, Allen was a Fellow, the Assistant Director for the Program on Energy and Minerals, Senior Fellow with the Research Program, Principal Investigator of the five-year Cooperative Agreement for the Pacific Disaster Center, and Director of the Professional Development Program. In each of these positions, he befriended many and proved his complete dedication to the East-West Center and its mission.

Allen was passionate about embracing challenging and diverse experiences, which he did while working in almost every country in the world. He seemed to gravitate toward difficult jobs and was perhaps unreasonably passionate about doing them right. He was a dedicated mentor to many staff at the East-West Center, generously promoting and supporting the development of others. He was a team player who took his collegial friendships and commitments very seriously indeed. Finally, he was a scholar who saw that actionable research made a difference because it made near-term change possible.

I admired Allen in so many ways, and I deeply regret his untimely passing. He leaves a legacy at the EWC that we deeply honor and the extent of which we are only now starting to realize.

A memorial service will be announced later. Meanwhile, we offer Allen’s wife and whole family our sincerest condolences.
